Abstract
Working with infants and children with feeding and swallowing disorders is challenging. These children are often medically compromised and prone to illness. They may be dependent in their feeding skills or may be self-feeders who need careful monitoring. Everyone involved in the education and medical care of such children needs to understand the feeding/swallowing problem and help to implement the treatment plan developed by the speech-language pathologist. This course addresses background information about medical disorders associated with dysphagia, ranging from cerebral palsy and cleft palate to gastroesophageal reflux disease. An overview of the normal development of skills (suckling, sucking, bottle and cup drinking, eating from a spoon, biting, chewing) with screening and evaluation techniques will be described. The course also offers some basic tips on addressing common feeding problems. Case studies will be used to allow the multi-disciplinary participants to engage in analysis of case histories and discussion of areas needing in depth assessment by different professionals.
